The 2010 Yellowstone Academy Breakfast will be held on Wednesday, October 20th from 7:30 – 8:30 a.m. at the Westin Galleria Hotel. This year’s theme is “A Hero Lies in You.”

The annual Breakfast is Yellowstone’s most significant fundraising event of the year. We need your help this year more than ever before and hope that you will be a “Hero” by hosting a table of ten people at the Breakfast. We are particularly interested in inviting guests---friends, family, business associates, and church members-- who might be interested in financially supporting Yellowstone Academy in a material way. We are also interested in inviting guests who might not have heard about Yellowstone and want to learn more about our school.

Dear Friends of Yellowstone

Excellence matters. As anyone even vaguely familiar with Yellowstone Academy knows, we are blessed with a marvelous staff and teachers whose positive impact on our students is nothing short of remarkable. They are not only skilled at their respective positions; they share a unique passion for educating the whole child: body, mind and spirit. At Yellowstone we have developed an unmistakable culture of excellence – we like to do things well. This attitude of excellence, particularly after another successful annual breakfast, has made Yellowstone Academy “the talk of the town.”

As a school completely funded by private donors (individuals, foundations, businesses, and churches), we insist on excellence because we are stewards of the assets entrusted to us, and because we must model excellence for our students. This “continuous improvement culture” is set at the top from an outstanding group of directors with whom I have the great privilege of serving.

Our board meets regularly to review financials, develop budgets, drive development initiatives, evaluate and develop our leaders, review organizational structure, explore in-kind contributions, manage costs, recruit new board leadership, build community alliances and so on. Most strong non-profit boards do these things, but our board does so much more. This group of individuals goes the extra mile:

· They read to our students

· They volunteer in the classroom

· They invite guests to tour our school

· They sponsor students to attend summer camp

· They provide pro bono legal work

· They organize groups to work school service days

· They volunteer as chaperones on field trips

· They mentor and coach staff and teachers

· They shepherd students, including them in

I don’t know of another board so deeply involved in the mission of its organization. This is a seasoned and faithful board, and a board that serves. They are individually and corporately committed to excellence and to providing a plan to sustain Yellowstone for decades to come. So, on behalf of this board, thank you for extending the reputation of Yellowstone Academy as a place of excellence. We are grateful for your generosity, your hours of volunteering, and your prayers. You have given hope to 288 exceptional students and are paving the way for hundreds more to come.

Physical Education Program Enhances Fitness, Cooperation

A new school year has brought a new mascot: the Yellowstone Lions. Each morning thirty-one 6th graders dress for gym in their Lions t-shirts and “discover muscles they didn’t even know they had.” The emphasis for 6th grade P.E. is on cooperative games and activities that encourage problem-solving strategies and communication, as well as continued development of team sports skills and quality sportsmanship.

For the remainder of the day, the Jack S. Blanton Center hums with activity as students come in to warm up, play games and develop soccer-ball handling skills before Friday’s game of “Sideline Soccer.” Fine motor skills are addressed as well as shoe-tying lessons on the fail-proof double knot!

Physical activity for all grade levels encourages teamwork and builds cooperation and coordination skills, whether the task at hand is balloon catching and bean bag tossing, or more sophisticated games. Even the youngest Yellowstone students get moving with activities designed to get heart rates up and minds alert for learning.

Annual Breakfast Draws Record Crowd

Nearly 900 friends and supporters of Yellowstone Academy attended the 2009 fundraising breakfast at the Westin Galleria on Wednesday, October 7. This annual event supports the ongoing work of the Academy and its students.

Underwritten by Ginny and Ron Nixon, Carol and Frank Gruen, the Todd Brock Family Foundation, Midway Foundation, and Avalon Advisors, the breakfast raised significant funds in spite of a challenging economy, and introduced over 200 new individuals to Yellowstone.

Yellowstone Board Chairman Les Csorba welcomed guests and introduced Yellowstone Academy Boy Scout Troop #255, who led the pledge to the American flag. Dr. Jim Jackson, Senior Pastor of Chapelwood United Methodist offered the invocation. The Yellowstone Academy Singers, led by Kiana Day and accompanied by Rev. Russell Thompson of City of Refuge Church, entertained guests with a medley of songs including “This Little Light of Mine,” “Lean on Me,” and “Oh Happy Day.”

Featured speakers for the event were Yellowstone Academy Advisory Board Member Charlie Ward, and Yellowstone Executive Director Kim Hansen and Director of Education Diane Van Zandt. Ward, a Heisman Trophy winner and former NBA basketball player, spoke of his involvement at Yellowstone and his appreciation for the school’s mission. A familiar face at Yellowstone, Ward has hosted Yellowstone students at his summer basketball camp. Hansen and Van Zandt spoke of the many challenges faced by Yellowstone students, and the importance of Yellowstone Academy in helping them break the cycle of poverty and build lives of achievement and success.

The event concluded with a rousing rendition of “I Believe I Can Fly” by Russell Thompson and the Yellowstone Academy Singers and a heartfelt thanks to all in attendance from Yellowstone founder David Lumpkins. Yellowstone offers special thanks to the talented event committee chaired by Claudia and Brad Freels: Sarah Barrasa, Pat Berry, Kiana Day, Dana Harms, Callie Holland, Pam Jesse, Cynthia Liveris, Kristi Lumpkins, Sandra Porter, Carla Reyna, Cheryl Simmons, Kim Strange, Shana Wood and Julie Wilhite.

Meet Melissa Matteson

Melissa Matteson is a PreK-3 teacher in the classroom with aide Donna Fussell. Melissa graduated from the University of Texas in 2009 with a degree in education and a business minor. Her job search took her to many places, but she says she "kept coming back to Yellowstone." Melissa appreciates the camaraderie of the Yellowstone faculty and looks forward to many years of teaching to come.

We believe that a student's self-esteem is enhanced by positive relationships with supportive adults. Becoming a volunteer is a fabulous way to make a difference in a child's life.

Shepherd A Child

Students at Yellowstone Academy will receive a first class education, but we also want them to learn responsibility, character, and self-reliance. One of the best ways to make this happen is for a mentor or shepherd to invest time, guidance, and love in a child.

The Shepherd-A-Child Program is administered in cooperation with Houston churches. You must be an active member of a local Christian church in order to be a shepherd. Our goal is for each child at Yellowstone Academy to be matched with an individual or family who will connect with that child in a positive way and play a role in educational and social enrichment.

Shepherds will commit to meeting with their child at least once a month during the school year. The visit may entail something as simple as going out for a meal or to the park, or may include a trip to the museum, a sporting event, or one's place of business. The goal is to show our children a larger slice of the world they live in.

Shepherds help introduce Yellowstone kids

to the larger world around them.

Jump Drives: Our 4th-7th grade computer classes will use these jump drives to save their work without congesting the hard drive with their documents. Prepackaged Snacks: All of our students from PK 3 - 7th grade will be in school from 7:45 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. We need donations of pre-packaged snacks that can be served to our students in the mid-afternoon. Suggestions are peanut butter or cheese crackers, trail mix, nuts, pretzels, goldfish or wheat thin crackers, or animal crackers. Items for Conduct Store: At each grade level, PK3 - 7th grade, our students earn conduct points throughout the day and spend these weekly to purchase items from a school store. Suggestions: small toys, school supplies, coin or change purses, decorative spiral notebooks, colorful stationary, fun pencils and pens, hair accessories, children's inexpensive watches, socks alarm clocks, art supplies, purses, back packs, wallets, small pieces of candy - excluding hard candy and gum (No toy guns, please)...

Meet Yellowstone's New Principal

Les Csorba, Chairman of the Board of Directors, recently announced that Yellowstone Academy has hired its first full-time principal, Cherie Singleton. Cherie brings to Yellowstone over 30 years of educational experience, including 17 years of leadership with at-risk students. She has served as a high school teacher, high school administrator, middle school administrator, and most recently as the Principal of Rowland Elementary Magnet School in the Victoria Independent School district. Cherie holds degrees from North Texas State University and Prairie View A & M University and is the married mother of two grown sons.

Cherie is a life-long learner and enjoys the daily challenge of teaching students. She is always looking for innovative ways to improve student academic performance and has enjoyed working with students from low income families. “Having the opportunity to bring in Christian education to these students is even more rewarding and gratifying.” Cherie is excited about having the opportunity "to teach students about the love of God in their lives.” Please come by and meet Cherie Singleton. For the 2010/11 academic year, Yellowstone will require approximately 15-20 desktop computers to further the education of our children. The total estimated cost per computer is $1,550. It will also be necessary to replace the server. The cost will be $5,000.
